Nose surgery

The nose surgery (medically known as rhinoplasty) is a surgical procedure that modifies the external shape and/or function of the nose. It is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries worldwide, although it can also be performed for medical reasons (e.g. to improve breathing). The following is a summary of the most important aspects:

Reasons for rhinoplasty

Aesthetic reasons:

  • Nasal dorsal hump

  • Crooked or asymmetrical nose

  • Nose too large or too small

  • Wide nostrils or poorly defined nasal tip

Medical reasons:

  • Nasal septum deviation

  • Respiratory problems

  • After-effects of accidents or trauma

  • Congenital malformations

Types of rhinoplasty

  • Closed rhinoplasty:

    • Incisions are made only inside the nose.

    • Non-visible scars

    • Shorter recovery time

    Open rhinoplasty:

    • Columella incision (between the nostrils)

    • Improved visibility for the surgeon in more complex cases

    3. Functional rhinoplasty:

    • Focused on restoring nasal breathing

    4. Non-surgical nasal correction (with hyaluronic acid):

    • Temporary correction by injections

    • Does not require surgery, but is not a permanent solution.

Procedure

  • Consultation:
Evaluation of the patient's wishes, examination of the nose and, if necessary, simulation of the result.

    Preoperative examinations:
Blood tests and, in some cases, tomography (CT).

    Surgery:
Duration 1-3 hours, usually under general anesthesia.

    Aftercare:
Nasal splint (approx. 1 week), swelling and bruising are common.

Risks and possible complications

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Infections
  • Nasal bleeding
  • Visible scars (rare)
  • Asymmetries
  • Dissatisfaction with the result (possible revision surgery)
  • Respiratory difficulties (temporary or permanent)

Recovery time

  • Socially acceptable after 1-2 weeks

  • Final result visible after 6-12 months

  • Swelling may last longer, especially at the tip of the nose.
