Laser skin resurfacing

The laser skin resurfacing (also known as laser resurfacing) is a dermatologic-aesthetic procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin, reduce fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and scars, and refine skin texture. Below is a summary of the most important information:

What happens during laser resurfacing?

There are two main types of lasers used for skin rejuvenation:

1 - Ablative lasers

They remove the top layer of skin (epidermis) and stimulate the production of new collagen in the underlying dermis.

Examples:

  • Laser CO₂ laser.

  • Erbium:YAG laser

They are more effective, but require a longer recovery time (1-2 weeks).

2 - Non-ablative lasers

They penetrate into the deep layers of the skin without damaging the surface and stimulate collagen production.

Examples:

  • Fraxel laser

  • Nd:YAG laser

What can be treated?

  • Fine lines and wrinkles (e.g., around the eyes and mouth)

  • Sun damage and pigmentation

  • Acne or surgical scars

  • Enlarged pores

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Loss of elasticity

Duration and number of sessions

  • Duration: approx. 20-60 minutes, depending on the area

  • Number of sessions: 1-5 (non-ablative), sometimes only 1 in ablative procedures

  • Interval: usually 4-6 weeks between sessions

Recovery and aftercare

  • Ablative lasers: redness, scabbing and swelling - 1-2 weeks recovery time

  • Non-ablative lasers: slight redness and swelling, no open wounds

  • Important: use of sunscreen (SPF 50), avoid aggressive products, saunas and solariums during the first few weeks

Risks and side effects
